Dang and Vianney (2007) conducted a study on Living in the Margins: A
National Survey of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Asian and Pacific
Islander Americans by surveying 860 LGBT respondents in 38 states of the USA.
LGBT refers to “Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender.” The study reported that
activists have often cited evidence that API (Asian and Pacific Islander Americans)
and LGBT people have faced pervasive harassment and discrimination because of
their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity. It is suggested that the
API and LGBT communities have attempted to address this problem more seriously.
The study also comments that there are usually missing voices from within the API
and the LGBT communities in terms of the research and that there is a need for
additional research and policy analysis of API and LGBT people. Nevertheless, this
study serves as the foundation that will encourage extensive research on race and
sexuality. Most correspondents agreed that there should be policy issues including
immigration, fighting, hate, violence, and harassment, media representations, health
care, career, and language barriers to help LGBT people. Moreover, the respondents
also claimed they have experienced homophobia and racism in their communities.
